Etihad’s Five Million Mile Race: Should You Do It?

The "Race to Fly" challenge offers Etihad Guest members the chance to win up to 5 million miles to the first loyalty-obsessed traveler who can jet off to 15 new destinations in their network.

Thought as “The Extraordinary Challenge,” it’s a direct nod to SAS’s wildly popular 2024 million-mile giveaway. But is it as good? Well lets break it down...

In this post:

The Extraordinary Challenge: What's at Stake?

Between May 26, 2025, and May 25, 2026, if you’re one of the first three Etihad Guest members to fly to or from each of their 15 new year-round destinations, you’ll win massive rewards.

- 1st place: 5,000,000 Etihad miles.
- 2nd Place: 3,000,000 miles
- 3rd Place: 1,000,000 miles

That’s enough for:

500+ Economy flights

70+ Business Class trips

Or over 40 First Class redemptions

(Per Etihad estimates, based on typical redemption values.)
You could fly on Etihad's "Apartments" First class suites.

The 15 Destinations

Participants must fly on Etihad-operated flights to or from the following 15 new year-round destinations between May 26, 2025, and May 25, 2026:

1. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
2. Algiers, Algeria
3. Atlanta, USA
4.Chiang Mai, Thailand
5.Hanoi, Vietnam
6.Hong Kong
7.Krabi, Thailand
8.Medan, Indonesia
9.Peshawar, Pakistan
10.Phnom Penh, Cambodia
11.Prague, Czech Republic
12. Sochi, Russia
13.Taipei, Taiwan
14.Tunis, Tunisia
15.Warsaw, Poland

There’s a bit of everything here, including some classic leisure hotspots, a few business cities, and a few very unique choices. Overall, I like it.

How to Enter?

- Register online at racetofly.etihad.com.

- Book flights, and yes, they must be Etihad-operated, paid revenue flights. (Etihad-operated, paid fares only).

- Track your progress on Etihad’s dashboard.

(Codeshares and award tickets do not count)

Strategic Considerations

This isn’t just about flying; it’s about timing, planning, and risk.

Some destinations are niche. You’ll need to navigate more complex visa policies and possibly non-daily flight frequencies.

Optimize routing: Fly open-jaw (e.g., AUH→Chiang Mai, then Krabi→AUH) to save time. But all flights must originate or terminate in Abu Dhabi.

“Shortest cumulative time” wins—likely meaning the total elapsed time from wheels-up on the first flight to wheels-down on the 15th. The tiebreaker goes to whoever registered earliest
Keep note of the final point above. Since the last flight to be launched is Algiers (Nov 7, 2025), the race can not realistically be completed before then. Also, enrolling now and starting late is the best thing you can do strategically.

Overall Perspective

This isn’t for the casual points collector. This is for people who have ALOT of time on their hands, and/or are:

- Mileage junkies
- Travel bloggers
- Aviation stunt chasers
- Loyalty warriors with free time, flexible passports, and a thirst for Etihad status
